Our wild journey…

Laura and I both grew up on intensive agricultural farms. Our view of land management has changed so much since having children – what does their future look like, what does the farm’s future look like?

We are a nature-depleted country - one in six of the 10,000 species in Great Britain are at risk of being lost. We have the highest export for nitrate for any country in the world per capita and/or per land area – a large contributing factor to our overly nutrified rivers is the application of synthetic nitrogen to farmland. Moving the earth, ploughing the soil, and applying fertilisers that damage the carbon within the soil results in loss to the soil system and a release of carbon into the atmosphere.

We absolutely do not have all the answers, but we are just questioning whether this way of doing things is sustainable. Sustainable for our rivers, for our soil, for our family and our planet.

So we wanted to try something different. We’ve embarked on this adventure of turning our family farm wild, as have our close friends and neighbouring farmers. Together we created Wendling Beck. A 2000-acre nature restoration project in the heart of Norfolk. Wildscapes is your way to come and see it.

We want people to understand the importance of biodiversity. We feel the best way to do that is to immerse yourself in it and learn all about it…just like we did (and we’re still learning). We want you to feel the grass between your toes and the plants in your hands. Listen to the barn owls screech at night, smell sweet, fresh air, and feel the wind in your face.

We want you to come and learn and connect with this place. And leave feeling restored and aware of your natural surroundings. Our place is yours whenever you want it - come and escape in the wild at Wildscapes.
